What changed for Meta Advantage+ on job ads on 27 October?

Since 27 October, Meta makes software for job ads choose explicitly for or against Advantage+ audience. What changed and what to check.

By Nikolay Broeks, Automation & Growth Engineer

A job ad on Facebook or Instagram aimed at the Netherlands has had strict audience rules since 2021: ages 18 to 65+, all genders, no postcodes and, according to Meta's Business Help Centre, a radius of 10 miles (17 kilometres) around a town. Since 27 October 2026 there is one more mandatory choice: Advantage+ audience on or off.

What changed on 27 October?

The change sits in the Marketing API, the connection through which software creates ads on Meta. Think of an applicant tracking system that turns vacancies into ads automatically, a job campaign tool, or an agency that builds campaigns with its own scripts. Meta announced the rule with version 26 of that API on 29 July 2026, and added that it would apply to every version from 27 October 2026.

The rule itself is short. When software creates an ad set in the special ad category for employment, and that ad set uses audience settings Meta is allowed to relax, the software must state explicitly whether Advantage+ audience is on or off. If the field is left empty, Meta rejects the ad set with an error. According to the documentation, a broad audience without further narrowing is not affected.

If you work in Ads Manager yourself, this rule changes nothing for you directly: it concerns the API. But many employers never see their job ads in Ads Manager, because a system or a partner creates them on their behalf. That is exactly where things can go wrong, usually without anyone noticing.

What does Advantage+ audience do on a job ad?

Advantage+ audience is the setting that lets Meta look beyond the audience you defined yourself. Meta's documentation on advanced targeting puts it plainly for age and gender: Meta shows ads beyond those settings when doing so is likely to improve performance. Your settings become a starting point rather than a boundary.

On a job ad the difference is smaller than on an ordinary ad, because the special category already removes a lot. You cannot narrow by age or gender, some interest and behaviour options are missing, you cannot exclude groups and lookalike audiences are unavailable. What remains is mostly location and a limited set of interests. With Advantage+ audience switched on, Meta may widen those as well.

Since version 23 of the API, in May 2025, Advantage+ audience has already been on by default for a default or relaxed setup. So the change now is not that Meta switches something new on. The change is that software creating a narrowed job audience can no longer stay silent: a choice has to be recorded, and somebody has made it.

What should you check now?

Start with the question of who actually creates your job ads. If it is a system or a partner, ask two things. Are the ads still running after 27 October, or have ad sets been rejected? And which choice has been built in, on or off, and why?

No single choice is always right. A vacancy for a technician in one region gains little from ads shown to people a hundred kilometres away, so off is the obvious choice there. A role people would relocate for, or one where you are searching widely, may benefit from on. What you do not want is a supplier fixing the choice for all your vacancies at once, just to make the error go away.

Then look at what actually comes in, not at what the platform reports. An ad that Meta says delivers cheap leads can bring in applicants who do not live in the region or do not fit the role. Our figures page explains why we judge ads on the applications themselves. How a campaign like this fits together from start to finish is described under job marketing.

What do employers ask us about Advantage+ on job ads?

Do I need to change anything myself as an employer?

Only if you have connected software to the Marketing API yourself. If you work in Ads Manager, the rule does not affect you directly. If your ads are created by an applicant tracking system, a tool or an agency, ask whether their integration was updated before 27 October. An integration that leaves the field empty gets an error on a narrowed job audience, and the ad set does not go live.

Is Advantage+ audience the same as an Advantage+ campaign?

No. Advantage+ audience is a setting inside an ad set that decides whether Meta may look beyond the audience you specified. An Advantage+ campaign is a campaign type in which Meta sets up more parts automatically than just the audience. This change only concerns the audience setting. Explanations of recruitment marketing terms are in our glossary.

Why do job ads have their own rules?

Meta wants to prevent employers from excluding groups based on personal characteristics such as age or gender. That is why advertisers reaching people in Europe have had to declare job ads under the special ad category for employment since 7 December 2021. Those who do not risk having the ad rejected. The restrictions apply even if you had no intention of excluding anyone.

Does this also apply to job ads on Instagram?

Yes. At Meta the ad set is the unit that decides who sees an ad, and that ad set can run on Facebook, Instagram or both. The special employment category and the Advantage+ audience choice apply to the whole ad set, so to the Instagram placements as well. How people apply after such an ad, and from which app, is covered in What do three years of Meta ads for recruitment actually deliver?

SocialFind runs job campaigns on Facebook and Instagram and checked this change against Meta's own documentation on 29 October 2026. If you would like articles like this in your inbox, sign up for our newsletter.
